The Firemen during the A.F.S. and N.F.S. period from 1941-1948

As we have read, the old Volunteer Brigade was, together with the firemen of course, absorbed into the Auxiliary Fire Service early in 1941, and then into the National Fire Service later that same year.

The Captain of the Brigade therefore stood down, and F Heritage was appointed Leading Fireman on the Station. The ‘old crew’ members were J Philpot, B King, J Wrighton, C Clark, J Fisher, P Hibberd, and from 1941 the new crew comprised W Darlow, A Calvert, T Parker, F Tarver, W Billing, H Walker, A Gibbs, C Hoggings and B Walker. Later came C Kitchen (1943) and J Quinton (1947).

T Heeks, a fireman with the Shipston on Stour crew, worked in Tysoe and provided cover to the Tysoe Fire Station during his working day. Conversely, Tysoe fireman J Gardiner gave cover to the Shipston on Stour crew in the daytime, whilst working in Shipston on Stour.

Sub Officer (later Station Officer) B Caswell, a full time fireman with the Warwickshire Fire Service, provided cover to the Tysoe Fire Station during his off-duty hours.

The Commemorative Oak tree planted in the station grounds by Earl Compton was moved, about a year after planting, into the cemetery off Sandpits Road, and a wooden seat was put around it.
